Allen Stevenson School - New York, New York
This project is an infill addition to two turn-of-the-century buildings owned by the Allen-Stevenson School in Manhattan.
The school occupied two buildings on 78th Street and two more on 77th Street. It was cramped for space and needed additional
classrooms and a gymnasium.
On 77th Street, a five-story building was used for faculty housing and an adjacent lower building housed classrooms.
The architects added three stories to the lower building and then placed a gym over both buildings. The design of the
addition vertically extends the piers of the existing building, while the use of brick and cut stone medallions at the
top of the piers recalls similar elements on the building below. A new cornice line is established to match that of the
adjacent five-story building.
