Word of Mouth Cafe - Manhattan, NY
To retain the quality and an intimate character, the architects used design details that recalled
classic food shops and kitchens. The storefront is made up of small panes of glass through which
passers-by can see food displays and watch food preparation.
A vaulted ceiling of terracotta tiles gives a special character to the store. Some years later,
the owner decided to open a cafe upstairs. The resulting design integrates the facade and interior
details with the earlier shop below.
In the cafe, walls were decorated with pilasters and chair rails and a patterned tile floor.
Lighting and furniture were designed by the architects.
